There is a unique kind of magic that happens when the theories in a high school textbook suddenly come to life right before a student's eyes. That magic was on full display recently when the gates of the Scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI), Enugu, swung open like it has many times before, to welcome students and teachers from Model High School Amechi. For these bright young minds, the industrial visit was more than just a day outside the classroom, it was a thrilling journey into the heart of Nigerian engineering and indigenous technology.
From Blueprints to Reality
The adventure began in the auditorium with a warm welcome from the SEDI-Enugu team on behalf of the Acting Managing Director Engr. Dr. Lois Nwobodo,
coupled with an essential briefing on workshop safety. With minds primed and safety protocols understood, the students stepped onto the operational
floors. Their first stop was the Equipment Testing Laboratory and the Optical workshop, were they saw practical implementation and industrial
output of Chemistry, Physic and Biology. Moving deeper into the institute, the students entered the Glass Blowing and Scientific Glassware Workshop.
Here, the heat of the furnaces met the incredible precision of human craftsmanship. The students watched, spellbound, as raw borosilicate glass tubes
were heated under intense flames and skillfully shaped into the very beakers, pipettes, and burettes they use in their school chemistry labs.
Next, the tour advanced to the heavy machinery of the Advanced Manufacturing and Machine Shop. The air was alive with the hum of innovation.
Students stood side-by-side with SEDI’s technical experts, witnessing Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines and plastic injection molders
carve out intricate mechanical components and mass-produce school science kits with flawless accuracy.
Inspiring the Next Generation of STEM Leaders,
which is something The Executive Vice Chairman of NASENI Mr. Khalil Sulieman Halilu is passionate about; The excursion concluded in the grand SEDI
Exhibition Showroom, a space dedicated to the finished products that drive Nigeria's science and educational sectors forward. Surrounded by locally
manufactured scientific instruments and agricultural machinery, the students engaged in a lively, inspiring Q&A session with the institute’s engineers.
Questions poured in about material science, computer programming, and the career paths open to young Africans in STEM.
As the School buses loaded
up for the journey back to Amechi, the energy among the students was palpable. By bridging the gap between the classroom whiteboard and cutting-edge
industrial production, the visit to SEDI Enugu did more than just teach, it inspired. By investing time in these brilliant young minds, SEDI Enugu
continues to fulfill its vital mandate under NASENI: not just to develop scientific equipment, but to cultivate the next generation of innovators,
engineers, and visionaries who will shape the future of our nation
