Optical instruments are based on optics. They use mirrors and lenses to reflect and refract light and form images. The light microscope and telescope use convex lenses and mirrors to make enlarged images of very tiny or distant objects. A camera uses a convex lens to make a reduced image of an object. Optical section is saddled with the responsibility of producing all form of optical instrument: Prisms, telescope, concave and convex lens to mention a few.
Glassblowing section is tasked with designing and shaping glass into various shapes and designs, creating handcrafted giftware, stemware, glassware, ornate glass mirrors, sculpture pieces and glass instruments used in laboratories. Glassblowing is a glassforming technique that involves inflating molten glass into a bubble (or parison) with the aid of a blowpipe (or blow tube). All the glassware found in our Primary Science Kits (PSK) is produced in this section.
A graduation is a mark used to indicate points on a visual scale. The scale does not have to be straight; it can be curved, as on a protractor, but the graduations must be spaced at a constant length apart. In this section glass wares are marked to indicate points on a visual scale, this process is done using several techniques. All the output from Glassblowing, Optical and other departments are worked on in optical workshop.
Wood work shop like its fundly called in the institute is key to almost every manufacturing process the institute involves in, the section is equipped with state of the heart machines to carry out every wood related activity. Its also equipped with a wood treatment plant, which aids in improving the quality of office and laboratory furnitures manufactured by the institute. We have also reached the stage of combining wood with some allied materials to produce durable and breath taking outputs.
This section effectively carries out the process of applying metal coating on piece of metal (or another conductive surface) through elctro-deposition process. In electroplating the deposited metal becomes part of the existing product with the plating/coating. In SEDI-Enugu, all electroplating process is done within the institute, however complex.
In machine shop a form of subtractive manufacturing is done. Machinists use machine tools and cutting tools to make parts, usually of metal or plastic and sometimes of other materials such as glass or wood. Traditional form of manufacturing is carried out in this section several lathe machines can be found here. Although the institute has moved into more advanced forms of manufacturing, we still maintain a well equipped and highly functional machine shop.
Welding and Fabrication joins together pieces of metals with similar melting points and composition using fusion, their activities further extends to the evolutionary process of creating a metal product, from layout and designs to formation and finishing. Most of our manufacturing activities involves the use of metal, it makes this section indispensable to our manufacturing services.
Is generally responsible for building and/or assembling machinery. This tasks are carried out through automated or manual processes, depending on demand and timeline. Machine Building plays a pivotal role in nation building and its key to the mandate of SEDI-Enugu. Recently, the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) signed and MOU with National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), our supervisory agency, on Agricultural Mechanisation Promotion. This singular act has already activated the exhibition of already existing Agricultural machines in our warehouse, and further research along the agriculture value chain.
In this section metal castings are produced. Metals are cast into shapes by melting them into liqiud, pouring the metal into a mold and removing the mold material after the metal has solidified as it cools. We have all sort of Furnace in our Foundry; Induction, crucible, cupola and so on. Most of the Furnace found in our Foundry were made by us in the institute. Its also safe to state that we have the only functional Foundry in the South-East.
Plastic Recycling department deal with processing of recovered scrap or waste plastic, reprocessing the materials through several techniques into useful products. Due to several unfortunate factors, an insignificant amount of plastic waste is reprocessed into useful product in Nigeria. In SEDI-Enugu, we play our part in the waste recycling activity, using Plastic Recycling section as an active tool in acheiving success.
Plastic Production section in SEDI-Enugu, enjoys a seamless collaboration with Plastic Recycling amongs other departments. Even though they work mostly with virgin materials, recycled materials are also used for production of plastic items. So the main duty of this department is production of plastic items using natural or recycled materials through a process known as polymerisation or polycondensation. Some of the outputs are: gocery bags, cloth hangers, water cans, interlocking block mold and any plastic item what so ever.
This sectiont is responsible for fitting together component parts of some items produced by the institute. The Pimary Science Kit (PSK) is a good example of products that the Assembling, Packaging and PSK Production section handles. Thier functions extends to packaging of products to maintain its integrity while in the warehouse, in transit or on the shelf.
In Surface Treatment section, our products are given a surface suitable for the intended enviroment and function. They actually improve the surface properties; such as appearance, strength, corrosion resistance, friction, wear and tear. Detialed attention is paid to the surface quality of every product before it is passed by quality control.
Production Management is saddled with a lot of important responsibilities, which includes: planning and organisation of schedules, assessing project and resource requirements, estimating, negotiating and agreeing budgets and timescales with technicians and engineers, ensuring that health and safety regulations are met and determining quality control standards.
Machine Design section designs machine parts by utilizing the whole knowledge and experience of the engineers or personnel in the section. Attention is given to key aspects of their job schedules, which are as follows: designing for strength, functionality, designing for manufacturing process, for safety and aesthetics.
